Hello parents,
This week the children were introduced to the concept of subtraction. For developmental play, the children had fun performing simple subtraction problems by stamping and crossing out the corresponding number of pictures on paper.
During our Numeracy lesson, the children created their own sticker subtraction stories. They chose a number and pasted the corresponding number of stickers on their activity sheet. They then picked a smaller number and crossed out the number of stickers accordingly. They drew pictures on the remaining stickers and wrote their stories down. Here are some of their subtraction stories:
8 tanks were at war.
2 got destroyed.
There were 6 tanks left. - Siddiq
There were 10 children at the park.
5 fell down.
There were 5 left standing. - Serenity
I have 9 hearts.
I take away 1 heart.
I have 8 hearts left. - Adira
I have 7 tanks.
2 tanks broke down.
I have 5 tanks left. - Conor
I have 8 cars.
I give 7 cars to my sister.
I have 1 car left. - Celestine
We also explored a new art technique using liquid watercolours and salt. First, we wet our papers with water. Then, we used droppers to drop different liquid watercolours on our papers. We observed how the colours merged and sprinkled salt on our artwork. We let it dry and discovered that the salt created unexpected textures on our masterpieces. It was really interesting!
Our week is not complete without some sand play and water play fun. Through digging and burying themselves in sand as well as splashing and filling pails with water, the children learn to build friendships and work and play cooperatively together. They also learn to communicate their wants effectively and resolve conflicts amicably. We hope they will bring these life skills with them throughout their life as they meet new friends and go through new life challenges and experiences in the future.
Till the next post!
