The children had a superb National Day celebration. This year is a special year as Singapore celebrates her 50th birthday. In order to commemorate the Golden Jubilee celebration, we kicked off the week by making crepe paper Singapore flags during developmental play.
What a great opportunity it was for the children to be exposed to the meaning behind the colours and shapes on the Singapore flag. After making the craft, they learned that the red on the flag symbolises universal brotherhood and the white signifies purity. The crescent moon represents Singapore as a young nation and each of the five stars stands for democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality. The children were also introduced to the prominent figures in Singapore such as the first President; Yusof Ishak and the first Prime Minister; Lee Kuan Yew, as well as the current President; Tony Tan and the current Prime Minister; Lee Hsien Loong.
We also made a 3D artwork of one of Singapore's most iconic landmark, the Singapore Flyer. The children learned that the Singapore Flyer is the world's tallest observation wheel, 30 metres taller than the London eye. They also discovered an interesting fact about the Singapore Flyer: It has 28 capsules, each capsule can fit 28 people and it takes 28 minutes to go all the way around! Isn't that fascinating? Singapore Flyer is truly indeed an engineering marvel.
The children eagerly painting the styrofoam wheel.
They then took turns to paste 28 capsules around the painted wheel using colourful pom poms.
The children were also excited to put on the National Day temporary tattoos.
The children then recited the pledge and sang the National Anthem of Singapore. They also sang a few National Day songs and waved the Singapore flags.
The K2s also performed a National Day skit that they have been practising very hard for since last week. It was about Sang Nila Utama and how Singapore got its name. I am tremendously proud of their confidence, coordination and ability to remember all their lines and you should too. Kudos K2s!
On that note, Happy Birthday Singapore!
Have a fabulous long SG50 weekend :)
Till the next post!
